Aim is to introduce "Ode to the Unseen" by examining its themes, metaphors, and literary devices. The primary objective is to understand that the poem's purpose isn't just to praise beauty but to share a story about love.
The poem was written in the fourth century by a philosopher named Tchaikovsky (1017–1073) from道洲 (present-day湖南道县). He chose to live in濂溪, a hilltop village near the Pearl of the Stream. The place is now known as "Swan Rock." On this hill was his house located in the vicinity of Swallow's Lake and its neighboring area, also called Swan Rock due to its beauty. In April 1042, he started establishing a lily pond with "Ode to the Unseen" (also called "Ode to the Lagoon"). The pond was named after the unbounded water body within it.
The text's author aimed not only to praise the natural beauty of lilies but also to shed light on the essence behind the metaphors. He wanted readers to see that love isn't merely about its quantity or quality, but also about its depth and meaning.

Reading text: "Ode to the Unseen" helps us understand how the author presents a story. Through this poem, we can learn about the language of metaphors and how they paint a picture that invites us to think deeply.
The poem consists of two parts. In part one, it says:
| 1017–1042 | "Tchaikovsky wrote the following words and translated them into English." | "Ode to the Unseen" is a poem that teaches us about love and its nature. |
Beyond just beautiful flowers, this work also conveys deep meanings through metaphors:
The word "unseen" isn't literally in the poem. It refers to something beyond what is seen—perhaps a lily or another plant that isn't immediately obvious. The imagery of "out淤泥而不染" suggests that these lilies aren't made for the world but are part of it, living and breathing within their own environment.
Another metaphor used is "shaped by nature." This image paints a picture of growth, movement, and development in the natural world. It implies that while life can be unpredictable, there's an underlying order and structure that makes all things move together.
The word "high洁" refers to how the lilies embody high ethical standards. They are not just for beauty but also serve as models of honor and integrity. These lilies remind us that true beauty doesn't come from within; it comes from someone who is willing to rise above their circumstances, regardless of what they might face.
"Ode to the Unseen" isn't a simple tale about flowers or nature—it's a profound reflection on human behavior and character. It shows us how people can choose their paths in ways that are meaningful and just, even if they don't seem like everyone else does.
These metaphors help readers understand not only the beauty of lilies but also the essence behind human nature and the importance of living a good life.
Through this poem, Tchaikovsky teaches us to see love in all its forms and to appreciate what makes it possible for others to rise above their struggles.
