Chinese远征军: A Reflection
After viewing The Chinese War of Independence, the thought of leaving behind the heroes of this war and the last ones who left behind the battlefield remains in my heart. It was a perfect conclusion, but I recall twenty years later that when these heroes were turned into teachers, a dark fate awaited them—scorn from the people. What does one feel when they finally go home?
Furthermore, like the men who did not make it to Taiwan during the war, I cannot fathom what someone will do if they are unable to return after 1949. The浩劫 was a more devastating disaster than that when these heroes were turned into old men. They made it through and yet... What came of them?
Looking back on the film, I read that I had just watched it and then spent hours thinking about what should be said about this experience. After all, I was a Chinese man, but I saw the people of China in a way they didn't understand. They fought for freedom as I did for independence. In those days, when we were warriors fighting for an idea that truly meant everything to us—our nation, our country—this is what we should remember.
What about today? Many believe we are safer now, but the truth is, the history of this war and the subsequent destruction of the People's Republic of China is something we cannot forget. The people who lost their homes in the hopes of escaping a place they had never come from... It is not only their lives that matter—our country. In times of crisis, it is our blood that matters most.
But here I am, today, remembering what was lost and what was gained during this war. As heroes, we will never forget these moments when we shared the line with a stranger or faced difficult odds together. The stories of those who fought for freedom... It is not easy to see all of their faces in one's head.
Still, I remember that after the war, many Chinese died from disease because they did not have a chance to escape back to their motherland. These were the lives of many: the brave men and women who survived, the boys and girls who learned how to fight for their country... It is hard to imagine their suffering. But those who lost their homes in that decision... I will never forget.
In the end, whether it was the Chinese Communist Party or the United States military, we must carry forward what we have lost—our love for freedom, our courage when faced with danger, and the bonds we formed together. These are the lessons we carry today...
